WhiskeyNiner Ham Radio Site Reaches Beta Status

Our Current Challenges

Whiskey Niner, LLC was created to offer Amateur Radio operators an innovative way to enjoy their hobby. For enthusiasts, the world is best understood through a map, where contacts aren't just in the next town or county, but radiate outward in all directions in a radius.

Amateur Radio faces a significant technology gap which has deterred younger generations from getting involved. However, and despite that tens of thousands of new Hand Held operators are pouring into Amateur Radio and seeking better tooling.

Repeaters are vital to Amateur Radio, but challenges are arising as some attempt to copyright this information, hindering developers from innovating. Moreover, more and more Ham Radio State Coordinators are no longer sharing repeater data and instead are turning it over to those claiming copywrite. This is an attempt to control OUR data.

Addressing these Challenges

First, our community will establish its own National Repeater Registry, which will remain freely accessible to everyone. We will also make this data available to software developers at no cost.

Second, we will create a new registry for Simplex "infrastructure-less" nodes to serve as a backup in case repeaters fail or during a grid-down scenario. The Mesh Network seems to offer promising possibilities.

Third, we're unveiling a completely new feature that lets users view active repeaters, see who is using them, rate them, and remove inactive ones.
